Breakaway
The 2010 FIRST Robotics Competition game is called Breakaway. Breakaway is played on a 27 by 54-foot carpet covered playing field. Spanning the field in two places are 12 inch tall "bumps" that separate the field into three zones. Alliances of three teams attempt to score points by collecting soccer balls into the two goals at each end of the field. In the center of each bump, is a 9 foot tall tower that robots can climb at the end of the match. Each ball that is scored into a goal is worth one point, every robot that is hanging from one of the towers is worth two points, and three points are awarded to every robot that is suspended off a robot that is hanging from a tower. From January 9th until February 23rd, PHRED is going to be designing and building a robot to compete in this game at the Oregon regional competition on March 6th and 7th in Portland Oregon. For more information on Breakaway, the game manuals can be found on the FIRST website and an animation explaining the game can be found here.
